Mark Shaefer

Mark Shaefer joined the firm in 2021 after several years as a prosecutor with the Augusta Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.  A native of Augusta, GA Mark graduated from Augusta Prep in 2001 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Mercer University.  Mark returned to Augusta after undergrad and co-founded a non-profit organization that used an art curriculum to teach fundamentals of success to elementary and middle school students.  A love of science and service inspired Mark’s entry into law with a focus primarily on intellectual property and healthcare law.  Mark graduated Mercer University Law School in 2011 and spent the next five years in Birmingham, Alabama while his wife, Dr. Alexis Shaefer, completed her neurology residency.  After 5 years of civil practice in Birmingham, Mark and his wife returned to Augusta where he then served as an Assistant District Attorney under Hon. Ashley Wright and Natalie S. Paine.

During that time Mark amassed countless hours of courtroom experience and learned to thrive in the fast-paced trial setting.  As a trial attorney Mark gained vast experience in legal writing, research, analysis, and most importantly the ability to present those things to a judge and jury.  Mark tried several criminal cases to juries from start to finish as both first chair and second chair and handled hundreds of other matters both civil and criminal.  Since joining Fleming & Nelson he has also gained experience in criminal defense by successfully defending individuals against a variety of charges.

Mark now represents clients in a wide range of matters, both civil and criminal, that call on his vast background and several areas of legal experience.  Mark’s primary practice areas are in contract law, small government law, and criminal defense, but also includes probate, domestic, and civil litigation.
